    Climate Conversations

10:30AM - The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal

Presenters: Crowley Wind Services & Avangrid Renewables

The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal is a public-private partnership among Crowley, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, and the City of Salem, with AVANGRID serving as the port’s anchor tenant through its Park City Wind project. The terminal will be a logistics and operations center for wind turbine pre-assembly, transportation, staging activities and storage of assembly components. This project brings a new focus on a clean energy future, based on renewable power and with a commitment to positive action to mitigate climate change. Construction of the wind terminal is now expected to start in 2024, with the terminal complete in 2026.

11:15AM - South Salem Commuter Rail Stop and Electric Rail in Salem

Presenters: The Salem Partnership & MBTA

The preferred location for the new second commuter rail stop is in South Salem, between Jefferson Avenue and Canal Street, in a vibrant urban center with nearby residential neighborhoods, North Shore Medical Center and Salem State University. The preferred location for the stop minimizes impacts to local abutters.

At the same time, the MBTA is working to increase service on the Fairmount Line with a new fleet of electric battery-powered trains, and the Newburyport/Rockport line could be next for electrification, as the MBTA is considering building an electric car maintenance facility at Castle Hill, right next to the proposed new South Salem Rail Stop.
