Over 20 realtors participated in Salem’s first Lifestyle Open House on Sunday, June 14, showing over 30 properties in and around a walkable downtown.

Just 16 miles north of Boston and accessible by car, train, and ferry, Salem offers its residents many benefits of urban living, but with easy access to beaches, parks, and open spaces. Salem's rich history gives the town a flavor all its own. Settled by the English in the early 1600s, it was an important port in the East Indian trade throughout the 18th century, and the city's maritime and colonial flavor still shine through. A thriving artist's community and an influx of young professionals have also begun to lend the area a cosmopolitan veneer. In sunny weather, tourists are a common sight along Pickering Wharf, at the Peabody Essex Museum, and along the pedestrian mall at Essex Street. With over 40 restaurants in the downtown area Salem has become the culinary destination on the North Shore.
Salem State College, located just down Lafayette Street from the city center, offers a full calendar of cultural, athletic, and community events, including plays, concerts, and other performances at its Center for the Arts.
There is no reason to expect the current surge in Salem's economy to slow.
New projects include the just finished mixed-use Salem News building (apartments & restaurant), renovation of the Salem Jail into a mixed-use project, the $160 million renovation and expansion of the courts system, and the expansion of the commuter rail station parking garage.
