The 4th Annual Living Green & Renewable Energy Fair, organized by the Salem Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Salem Renewable Energy Taskforce, will take place on Saturday, May 21 from 10 am - 3 pm at Old Town Hall, 32 Derby Square, Salem, MA.

The Living Green & Renewable Energy Fair will bring together green industry professionals and consumers from the Greater Boston & North Shore regions to discuss products, services and information that encourage healthier, more sustainable consumption and lifestyles for businesses and families.

Schedule of Events


50+ Vendor Booths & Exhibits
Location: Inside Old Town Hall, Floors 1 + 2
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
Browse over 50 vendor booths and exhibitors and learn about green products, services and information to help you lead a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.  There will be lots of free take-aways, items for sale and prizes! There will be something for the whole family, so bring the kids!

Musical Performance by "bicycle powered band" Melodeego
Location: Derby Square, Outside Old Town Hall
Time: 10 am - 11 am
Melodeego commitment to "music in action" means that they are a a "bicycle powered band" that believes in environmental sustainability, social justice, and rocking until the first two have been achieved! With the help of a couple audience members, Melodeego will be sure to entertain all at the Living Green Fair! 
  
Free Screening of “Truck Farm Movie
Location: Cinema Salem, Museum Place Mall
10 am (Length 50 mins)
Truck Farm is a film and food project: a mobile community farm, a documentary about urban agriculture, and - a public art and education project. In the truck bed of an 1986 Dodge pickup, a mini-farm becomes a traveling, edible exhibit that brings a rural experience to urban areas.

Salem Beautification Committee Plant Sale Fundraiser
Location: 32 Derby Square (Outside Old Town Hall)
Time: 9 am – 2 pm
Choose from a wide assortment of home-grown perennials, a variety of annuals, and a selection of hanging baskets. Rain barrels, composters, water conservation garden spray nozzles and recycling bins will also be available for purchase. The goal of the Beautification Committee is to create civic pride and to motivate the City’s diverse population to participate in the beautification process.  The Committee will identify areas in need of improvement, will create programs, recruit volunteers and will secure the funding resources to achieve its goals.

Free Seed Swap hosted by Salem Community Gardens
Location: 32 Derby Square (Outside Old Town Hall)
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
The Salem Community Gardens will host a Seed Swap table at the Living Green and Renewable Energy Fair.  People are encouraged to bring their extra vegetable and flower seeds for swapping. Save money and connect with local gardeners! You may find rare seeds and heirloom varieties that are better adapted for this region and you’ll have to opportunity to unload your leftover seeds from previous years.  SCG is a nonprofit organization managing organic community gardens in four of Salem's public parks: Mack Park, Palmer Cove, Winter Island, and Pickman Park.   SCG's primary goal is to provide a safe, fertile place for Salem residents to grow plants for food and enjoyment. 

Ethical Electronic Waste Recycling Event
Location: 32 Derby Square (Outside Old Town Hall)
Time: 10 am – 3 pm 
Ethically recycle your used electronics at the Living Green & Renewable Energy Fair.  We will be collecting e-waste - old computers, televisions, fax machines, cell phones, printers, stereo equipment, etc.- and then charge an ethical recycling fee of $1/pound that helps to cover the cost of ethically transporting and recycling that e-waste in accordance with the highest international standards. Grease Car on Display

Location: 32 Derby Square (Outside Old Town Hall)
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
Used vegetable oil is an alternative fuel for diesel engines and for heating oil burners. Fossil fuel pump rices are over $4 per gallon in some areas and approaching $5 per gallon.  Stop by the Living Green Fair to see a black 1997 Mercedes Benz E300 converted grease car.  Owner Steve Majeski will be on hand to answer all of your grease car questions.

Citizens for Salem/Beverly Water Resources
Location: (32 Derby Square Outside Old Town Hall)
Time: 11:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m
Refill your reusable water bottle and learn about the free public Butt Bin and Water Canteen Borrow Programs and how “Take Back the Tap” reduces non-biodegradable plastic bottle waste in Beverly and Salem.

Salem News: "The Hawthorne Hotel in Salem and Appleton Farms in Ipswich were among 11 energy efficiency projects statewide that will share $16.25 million in federal stimulus money, Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray announced. "The Hawthorne Hotel and Appleton Farms are two deserving sites for these federal funds," Congressman John Tierney said in a statement. The Hawthorne Hotel's owner, Three Corners Realty Trust, has teamed up with Nexamp of North Andover to win a $1.4 million grant for a deep energy retrofit to reduce the historic building's annual energy use by 50 percent. The hotel will replace light bulbs and get a high-efficiency hot water distribution system. The hotel will also install geothermal heating and cooling and high-efficiency interior distribution systems, displacing natural gas heat. "It is exciting to be a historic property and still be on the cutting edge of technology and green initiatives," said Kristie Poehler, regional director of sales and marketing for the hotel.

Salem State University has constructed a new residence hall designed to achieve status as a green building with LEED certification of Silver or higher. Marsh Hall includes a 325-seat dining facility as well as a large and a small meeting space, all of which will be open for use by the entire campus. The hall houses 525 students, which moves Salem State toward its goal of housing 50 percent of its students on campus.  This will lead to fewer commuting students, reducing the college’s carbon footprint and reducing congestion on streets and roads.

Viridian Energy: Our booth is designed to help customers understand Viridian's value proposition of greener, more affordable energy for their home or business.  We will have information on our two energy products: Everyday Green and Pure Green-e. 
Zipcar: We will have information on Zipcar memberships and special discounts, deals, and free give-away items to Living Green Fair attendees.
